Born Lisa Williamson in the Bronx, Sister Souljah was raised by her mother in government subsidized housing. Unhappy with the white American school system, she supplemented the education by reading African history. She later majored in American history and African Studies at Rutgers University where she also served as a well-known writer and political commentator for the school paper.
